C&P Happenings

Adding to the intellectual intensity of life in C&P is our series of screenings, exhibitions, and visiting artists. The C&P Art Gallery showcases the creative work of faculty, students, and visiting artists; and occasionally work curated from outside the University.  Film Fridays, funded by the Fine Arts Activity Fee, brings in screenings, artists and inter-media performances. All programs begin at 4:00 PM; are followed by a discussion; and are free and open to the public.

The Richard Blumenberg Screenwriting Award is calling for submissions.  Our alum jurors this year are Milcho Manchevski and Elisa Herrman. Deadline for submissions March 20, 2017.  For details contact: rwrowley@siu.edu

The Little Muddy's call is out for student work in film, video, photography.  Deadline for submission is March 29th and the screening will be on April 7th, 6:30 PM at the Guyon.

Visiting Artist, Chris Harris will screen his work on March 6, 2017 at 6:30 PM in Guyon Auditorium.  Harris' award-winning experimental films include a long take look at a post-industrial urban landscape, an optically printed and hand-processed film about black outlaws, a pinhole film about the cosmic consequences of the sun’s collapse; a macro lens close up of a child’s nightlight and a double projection film about a theme park performance of Christ’s Passion.  Harris recently completed two multi-screen HD video installations that reenact and reimagine the slave daguerreotypes commissioned by Louis Agassiz in 1850. 

His work has screened at festivals, museums and cinematheques throughout North America and Europe including the 2014 Artists' Film Biennial at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London,the International Film Festival Rotterdam (2005, 2008, 2010), the VIENNALE-Vienna International Film Festival, the Edinburgh International Film Festival, the Leeds International Film Festival (2007, 2009), the San Francisco Cinematheque and Rencontres Internationales Paris among many others. Cosmologies of Black Cultural Production: A Conversation with Afrosurrealist Filmmaker Christopher Harris was published in the summer 2016 issue of Film Quarterly.

The 39th Big Muddy Film Festival starts with a pre-festival screening of War Films at Guyon Auditorium, 6 PM, Monday, 2/20.  Our jurors this year are:  Tomás Pichardo-Espaillat, Alrick Brown, and Ines Sommer.  The festival runs through 2/22-2/26. Click here for schedule and information

Film Fridays will screen Gary Maddin's The Forbidden Room (2015), Friday December 2, 2016 at 4PM, Comm 1116 (Soundstage). Free and open to the Public.

Confluence:  C&P faculty and students joined three other schools: Tulane University, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and The College of New Jersey during the last weekend in April at SIU for the Confluence Symposium http://art.tcnj.edu/2016/05/12/students-examine-what-being-local-means/

 Expanding Media Symposium, 2016Opening Reception, Friday, April 29th, C&P Gallery will showcase the collaborative work between SIUC, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Tulane, and The College of New Jersey. The weekend will feature 365 degree VR narrative video workshop; a workshop sound mapping Carbondale; and a Carbondale community digital archive workshop. The Big Muddy Crew Presents Little Muddy Film and Media Festival at Guyon Auditorium. From 7:00-9:00PM, Friday, April 29, 2016. The LMFF celebrates the creative works of undergraduate and graduate students. Submit your cinema and photographic work by April 15th. Read more.

Steve Nozicka (BA, 1982) shared his experiences with students and led a lighting workshop on March 5th 2016. Steve is a commercial photographer based in Chicago.

Stacy Steers will be presenting her work on Tuesday, April 12th 2016 at Guyon Auditorium. 6:30 PM. This event is funded by the Fine Arts Activity Fee.

The Annual Department of Cinema and Photography Exhibit (students, staff and faculty) at the Cedarhurst Center for the Arts, Mt. Vernon, IL. The 2016 Exhibit, organized thematically around “Mythology,” will run from Feb 20th--May 1, 2016. Public Reception: February 20th, 6:30 PM.  

La Operaciaon (Ana Maria Garcia, 1982), a documentary film about the forced sterilization of women in Puerto Rico will be screened on February 19th 2016, Guyon Auditorium at 4:00PM.  

Aspen Hochhalter offered an Artist Workshop in Alternative Processes and Darkroom Lith Printing on Friday, February 12th 2016. Hochhalter will also serve as the guest juror for Lux: A fine arts photography journal published by our department.
