Ph.D. Mass Communication & Media Arts

The doctoral program engages students in the interdisciplinary study of global media within an intellectual community of scholars and media producers. Concepts and methods drawn from various research traditions in the field are compared and contrasted, while specialization in particular areas and approaches is open to students. Students receive an strong theoretical and methodological foundation through a flexible, college-wide program designed to produce outstanding scholars and teachers who make significant contributions to the understanding of mass media. Students work closely with nationally and internationally accomplished faculty members with expertise in a variety of media scholarship. 

MFA Media Arts : Cinema, Photography, Sonic Arts, New Media

- Overview, Application Materials Required and Curriculum

The interdisciplinary Master of Fine Arts degree provides substantial advanced study for a small number of talented individuals. The program emphasizes the artistic and intellectual development of the student and creation of quality artistic works in photography, film, video, sound and new media. Interdisciplinary media arts exploration is encouraged though students may opt to focus and refine their skill swithin one mediaum as well. Students learn to contextualize their work within appropriate contemporary thought and practice. Avaialble course work in studio production, criticism, theory, history and combined media studies emphasizes the interwoven character of traditional and contemporary approaches and technologies in the 21st century.

MA Media Theory & Research

The MA offers students a solid foundation in media research, methods and theory in order to prepare for doctoral studies or  research positions in media organizations.

MS Professional Media and Media Managment Studies

The MS Degree in Professional Media & Management Studies is designed to provide students with an intellectual background in the theory and critique of the communication industries while preparing to establish careers in communication industries and organizations. This program aims to train intelligent, self aware, flexible graduates who will go on to become leaders in the field. Students focus in one or more of the following tracks:

  • Media Management & Strategic Communication/Advertising
  • Documentary Media Production
  • Journalism: Public Policy/Investigative Reporting
  • New Media
