The primary aim of this course is to gain an understanding of the multiple roles, contributions, and ways to develop communication and media efforts of civil society organizations (NGOs,NPOs) and especially the role of the Communicator, or media officer, responsible for managing these efforts. Thus, participation in this course will enable participants to assess if this is a professional option worth pursuing.
This course will prepare the students to communicate with, design, promote, and participate in communities in the age of social media. It aims to help students understand various issues related to social media use and prepares students with knowledge and strategies about how to effectively utilize social media in social campaigns.
In this class, we will explore the various meanings ascribed to the term “alternative media,” then examine and analyze alternative media in their various forms and contexts, from the local to the global. Case studies from around the world demonstrate the growing relevance of alternative media in contemporary societies, and the complex relationships they navigate with political and social movements, with governments, and with more mainstream forms of media.
The course is designed for current students and working professionals to gain an understanding of the research process, research methods and how to conduct research in their organizations. The course will help those planning for careers or already working in small and large organizations with research skills for writing effective reports, strategic planning, foreseeing problems and making informed decisions.
This course is a brief theoretical and practical survey in understanding communication and social change broadly and theoretically. We will explore concepts and theories of social change that have application for our critical arts practice, studies, activism, performance and/or industries. The objective of the course is to join theories of social change with the interests of the students in the course, allowing for flexibility and freedom for students to work on and develop their current projects in the area of social change.
