WSIU, Carbondale Library Present Free Local Film Screening

You are invited to attend a Community Cinema screening and discussion of the film The Powerbroker: Whitney Young's Fight for Civil Rights on Saturday, February 23 at 2:30pm at the Carbondale Public Library, 405 West Main. WSIU and the Carbondale Public Library are co-sponsoring the screening.

Dr. Derrick Williams, Assistant Director of the SIU Carbondale Center for Inclusive ExcellenceDr. Robbie Lieberman, Professor in the SIU Carbondale History Department, and Rev. Sidney Logwood of Rock Hill Baptist Church and past president of theCarbondale Chapter of the NAACP will facilitate a discussion after the film.

The Powerbroker: Whitney Young's Fight for Civil Rights follows Whitney Young Jr.'s journey from segregated Kentucky to head of the National Urban League. Unique among black leaders, Young took the fight directly to the powerful white elite, gaining allies in business and government, including three presidents. He had the difficult tasks of calming the fears of white allies, relieving the doubts of fellow civil rights leaders, and responding to attacks from the militant black power movement.

WSIU and the Carbondale Public Library will continue to host Community Cinemascreenings at the library at 2:30pm on the last Saturday of each month through June.
