WSIU Public Television, a public media arm of Southern Illinois University, is among multiple Illinois public television stations slated to air coverage of the Spring 2013 session of the Illinois General Assembly as part of the statewide public affairs television series Illinois Lawmakers.
Shot on location at the State Capitol in Springfield, and hosted and produced by veteran Statehouse reporter and WSIU-TV producer Jak TichenorIllinois Lawmakers will air on WSIU-TV's primary HD channels, WSIU-TV 8.1 and WUSI-TV 16.1, on Fridays at 7:30pm from May 3 through May 31, with repeats on Sundays at 6pm from May 5 through May 26.
Additional repeats will air on WSIU's WORLD channels, WSIU-TV 8.2 and WUSI-TV 16.2, on Saturdays at 5:30pm, Sundays at 10:30pm, and Mondays at 11:30am in May.
“Pension reform, concealed carry/gun control, same-sex marriage, expanding casino gambling, and medical marijuana are just a few of the issues facing lawmakers this spring,” said series host and executive producer Jak Tichenor. “Any one of these issues would keep the General Assembly busy for an entire session, but to have them all converge at once in the Capitol is truly extraordinary.”
Lawmakers are also struggling to find ways to cut spending for state programs while paying down an estimated nine billion dollars in overdue bills.
Produced on-site at the Illinois Statehouse, Illinois Lawmakers was launched in 1986 to provide timely, in-depth coverage of the Illinois General Assembly. It features on-set debates with lawmakers, exclusive interviews with the legislative leadership, and analysis from veteran journalists.
The series is widely respected throughout the state, says Rich Miller, editor and publisher of the influential political newsletter “Capitol Fax” and frequent contributor on the set of  Illinois Lawmakers.
Illinois Lawmakers is essential, intelligent television,” says Miller. “The program's consistent commitment to quality raises it above all others. Simply put, nobody, anywhere, does it better.”
Illinois Lawmakers is a joint production of WSIU-TV Carbondale, WTVP-TV Peoria, and Illinois Public Media (WILL) Urbana-Champaign. Learn more online at illinoislawmakers.org.
