GMRC Event: Professor Rita Kothari

Professor Rita Kothari of St. Xavier's College in Ahmedabad, India is a Fulbright Visiting Researcher with the Global Media Research Center specializing in translation studies. She will be at the Center from September 1st through November 27th 2006.

On Thursday, Ocotber 19th, Professor Kothari will present "Translating India: The Many Roles of English" from 4:30-6:30 in Communications 1032. This is the second of three scheduled presentations she will give while in Carbondale. This is a free event and all are welcome.

Kothari's talk on The Many Roles of English situates the upsurge of English translation activity in India in the context of India's relationship with the English language. As the Indian urban, English-speaking middle-class expands it use of English and includes it in its cultural world, English ceases to be an instrument of colonial domination and becomes an avatar of India's postcolonial expression. In an interesting way, this also applies to the case of literature by India's Dalits-untouchables and underprivileged communities.
