GMRC: Oct 12 - Skin Color, Global Racism, and the Shifting Politics of Feminism

The Global Media Research Center presents Professor Margaret Hunter, Department of Sociology, Mills College

Skin Color, Global Racism, and the Shifting Politics of Feminism

Monday, October 12th.  4:30 p.m.  Communications 1032

Colorism is a global phenomenon. Mass media help communicate the privileged status of light skin tone and contribute to its economic, political, and social status. How are global racial and economic conflicts displayed on women of color's bodies? Hunter will discuss her multi-method social science research as it addresses these questions.

Margaret Hunter is Associate Professor of Sociology at Mills College in Oakland, California. Her book, Race, Gender, and the Politics of Skin Tone (Routledge 2005) investigates colorism in the African American and Mexican American communities. Hunter also conducts research on the racial attitudes of young adults, feminist theory, and the racial and gender politics of hip hop.
