Thesis: How Parents Use Television to Enrich Their Children’s Cultural Identity:  The Case Study of Shalom Sesame and Jewish Life

Description: Beth Spezia manages WSIU Public Broadcasting’s award-winning educational and community outreach services. She communicates with community partners and audiences across PBS television, NPR radio, print and online platforms. She builds relationships within and outside the university, civil society organizations, state, national, and government agencies.  Beth is a member of the International Communication Association and serves on the Global Media Research Center advisory group at SIU. Beth’s research focus is on children’s media, public service media, and political economy of media. 

Highlights of her educational experience at SIU include:

  • Working with Dean Dafna Lemish and colleagues on research, teaching, and development projects for the college
  • Presenting to undergraduate classes, mentoring undergraduate students, producing creative media projects
  • Participating as a juror in selecting the Special Prizes: Best Children’s Programs of the Last 50 Years, Prix Jeunesse International, 2014
  • Research Scholarships:  Prix Jeunesse International Festival, Munich, Germany (2012, 2014, 2016)
  • Invited presentations on children’s media in London (2015) and New York (2016)
