Robert Spellman, J.D

Robert Spellman joined the School of Journalism in 1985 as a specialist in media law and public policy reporting after careers as a journalist, head of two public agencies, and as an attorney. He retired in 2006. He also taught religion and public policy in the university honors program. As a reporter for Gannett Newspapers he shared in a Pulitzer Prize. In 1998-1999 he was a Fulbright Scholar at Shanghai International Studies University. In 2004 he was a guest lecturer on military censorship at Oxford University in Great Britain. He is the author of more than 80 articles and conference papers on media law, media history, and newspaper and broadcast reporting. Among the journals in which his articles have been published are Journalism Quarterly, Gazette, American Journalism, and Communications & The Law. He served on the Media Law Committee of the Illinois Bar Association and has been active in the Society of Professional Journalists, Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, American Journalism Historians Association, and International Communication Association.
