Students in the SIU School of Journalism enter and win numerous annual awards and other recognition for their work, not only in student categories, but also in professional competitions.

Most recently, The National Press Photographers Association honored the SIU student chapter with its Outstanding NPPA Student Chapter Award for “4:56 a.m. The Story of the Feb. 29, 2012 Tornado.”

The book also received first place for the best student magazine at the Society of Professional Journalists Region Five Mark of Excellence Awards.

Steve Matzger, a photojournalism student at SIU, won first place for his photo of one of the tornado's victims at the SPJ Region Five Mark of Excellence Awards.

Our students enter their work in the ISBOP | IPPA CNBAM ADDY'S, and ICPA, just to name a few. We take on big name schools with small school pride. Not only do we enter local competitions but we also enter international competitions with strong success.

Also every year the school recognizes student achievements at an honors banquet. Scholarship winners are also announced at this event
