Ayana Haaruun earned an M.F.A. in Mass Communication and Media Arts at Southern Illinois University. She now serves as Professor and Department Chair of the Media and Visual Communications Departments at Kennedy-King College. A multi-media arts practitioner and scholar, her creative work and research interests include documentary and experimental video, media anthropology within the African Diaspora, and new media entrepreneurship.   

Haaruun’s video work has been recognized by the Women in the Director’s Chair International Film Festival, the Black Harvest Festival of Film and Video, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. She served as producer for Hollywood Jerome, winner of the Independent Feature Project Production Fund Award. Haaruun has also produced Urban Viking, a reality television series, Let the Buck Down: A Story of Black Farmers and the experimental work, First We Pray.
