MCMA Students Receive Awards

August 22, 2018

What better way to start the new academic year than with huge congratulations to more of our students and their media productions!

Saluki Sports View won a 2018 Mid-America Student Television Awards for Best Sports program Saluki SportsView produced by RTD 2018 alum Jeremy Sneed (the River Region Evening Edition Sports Director for AY17 to 18.)  The prize, awarded by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Mid-America chapter, will be presented at the regional Emmys ceremony on Sept 22.   Saluki Sports is a once-a-month overview of SIU sports and airs during the River Region Evening Edition time slot and has been awarded the Best Student Sports Program by the Illinois Broadcast Association for the past two years.

The tradition continues at 26:46 as it received its umpteenth nomination for Best Magazine program by the Mid-America chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.  This is a professional Emmy nomination so Producers and RTD Seniors Ben Giles and Stephen Greene and team are competing against programs on stations from Missouri and Arkansas.  The winner will be announced at the regional Emmys ceremony on Sept 22. 26:46 airs on WSIU TV and the program, almost 20 years old, has won over 30 professional and student awards since its inception.

This past summer, CP Senior Kelechi Agwuncha’s short film Super Predator:  Preludes of the Black Fish was one of 25 finalists in the PBS Online Film Festival and the only student work in the festival.  WSIU was a sponsoring station in this prestigious seven-year-old festival.  Kelechi’s film was also part of the Toronto International Film Festival’s online film festival last year, an equally impressive achievement.

Congratulations to all the students who worked on all of these productions, and to all the faculty and staff who mentored these students.

And finally, we can’t thank WSIU enough for their support and collaboration with these three ventures, as well as our general educational mission.  We are so appreciative of WSIU's hard-working and supportive staff for their mentoring of our students and for giving the students’ work a venue in the region.
