CMCMA Students Win News Awards
October 10, 2014
Congratulations to our River Region Evening Edition students who won top honors Friday at the Silver Dome Student Awards in Chicago.
Rob Thies won 1st Place for Best TV Weathercast.
Alan Selph won 1st Place for Best TV Sports Package.
Krista Burris, a recent RTD grad, won two awards for Best TV News Package.
The student newscast team was presented with a second place honor for Best Student Newscast in the state. The Best Newscast honors are team honors for all 100+ students who work on the newscast in the newsroom and on the production crew. The Evening Edition students won first place in this category in 2012.
The awards are presented annually by the Illinois Broadcasters Association.
Ten students from SIU and River Region Evening Edition attended the awards luncheon and participated in IBA-University day at Loyola University in Chicago. They were accompanied by faculty member and RREE advisor, Joey Helleny.
Thank you to the faculty and professionals who mentor the students to help them reach this level of achievement: Eileen Waldron, Joey Helleny. Darryl Moses, Abby Hargrave and Mark St. George. In fact, thank you to everyone in the College who teaches, mentors and supports the RREE students.
The live student newscast is now in its 45th year of airing on WSIU-TV. It's a joint effort to serve our students and the community by the Department of Radio, Television, and Digital Media, WSIU Public Broadcasting, and the College of Mass Communications and Media Arts.
There are photos of our students in Chicago at the awards lunch on the RREE Facebook page.
