Don’s career spans over 40 years of media and management experience.
He joined Gardner Advertising Company, St. Louis, as a Media Buyer in 1964, and progressed to Vice President General Manager of the agency’s media operations in St. Louis, New York and Los Angeles. In the late sixties Gardner initiated a departure from traditional agencies by spinning off its various client focused operating units, including media operations. The new media company was named Advanswers Media/
Programming. Its mission was to serve Gardner clients, with primary emphasis also on developing outside new business. Don was appointed Senior VP, Marketing Director of Advanswers in 1972, and President in 1979. Advanswers was recognized as the first “unbundled” major advertising agency media department. It grew to be among the largest 10 US media service companies under Don’s leadership.
In later years Advanswers became a division of Wells Rich Greene Advertising and in 1998 a unit of Omnicom, the largest advertising holding company. Advanswers joined with other similar operations within Omnicom to form PHD, becoming one of the largest worldwide media specialist firms.
In the course of Don’s leadership and client working relationships, he has been a key participant in media strategies and executions in all major advertising categories. He retired from PHD in 2005 and is currently an independent media and marketing consultant.
Don graduated from the School of Journalism in 1961; he has received several recognitions: Journalism Alumnus of Year, Alumni Achievement Award, Alpha Delta Sigma Aid to Education and the St. Louis Advertising Hall of Fame.
Don served as a Captain in the Missouri Air National Guard, and on the St. Louis Art Museum Corporate Development Council, St. Clair Country Club Board of Directors and Missouri Athletic Club Board of Governors.
