Dr. Downing was the founding director of the College's Global Media Research Center. He is especially interested in corporate strategies and public policies for global media, and in world cinema. His most recent book-length work was the edited Encyclopedia of Social Movement Media (Sage Publications, 2011).
He served as Vice-President of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (2008-2012), and as Editor of Communication, Culture & Critique (2011-2013), an official journal of the International Communication Association.
Dr. Downing retired in May, 2010. He currently divides his time between his home in Brooklyn, New York, and teaching at universities overseas.
